Tauranga Fishing Report – 1st September 2016

On Air from 2/09/16 – Hauraki, News Talk, Radio Sport

The first week of spring has brought much calmer conditions to the Bay and opportunity to hit the water. Inshore the softbaits are turning up beautiful fat snapper with again Matakana, Papamoa East and the Kaituna areas all fishing well inside of 18m. The kahawhai too are carrying nice condition probably due to the abundance of whitebait and smelt pushing into the freshwater systems. And I tell you what when snapper and kahawhai are this fat they are not only tastier cooked but prime for sashimi.

Offshore – Some day time swordfish attempts for one of our boats resulted in a large thresher shark last weekend, but no swordfish. However with surface temps lifting just a little to 16 degrees means the Albacore tuna run must be right on us. To chase these great eating little tuna you will need a trolling setup 10kg plus and some small feather lures to troll. The best areas are usually in 100m water depth so the mayor knolls is a good place to start, look out for birds and or surface splashing and concentrate your efforts there.

Coming up next weekend is The Mount Motor Cycles Albacore Hapuka Tournament in conjunction with Duncan Reality and Bayfisher Magazine. Briefing is at 6.30pm Friday 9th with fishing on Sat & Sun. Entry forms available now online or from the Tauranga Sport Fishing Club.
