LEGASEA  – For years we have been limited to raising awareness of the issues affecting our fisheries and coastal waters so it’s a real buzz to share with you our reform package – Rescue Fish.

Rescue Fish is our best endeavour to inspire change so our fisheries can become more abundant and we can enjoy a healthier marine environment. We understand change is difficult. That is why LegaSea is working with a range of organisations and individuals to discuss and debate the merits of reform and how Rescue Fish will benefit us and future generations of Kiwis.

30th May 2020

CLUB UPDATE – WOW! The Club is really coming together, so thank you to all our wonderful sponsors that have made these improvements possible.
Dean Waddell from Pak N Save Cameron RoadTony Rich from Gerrand FlooringGreg Clarke from Hawridge DevelopmentsDoug Stewart from Higher Safe NZLee Hillier – BrushcraftSid Carter – Height 4 Hire,
Nick Shearman – Glass Art NZ

Also to our tireless helpers, of special note Doug Stewart, Ken Wilson, Ian Thomas, Lee Lawson, Alana Duncan, Kane DeRaat along with many others who have put in their own time and money to pull this job together.

THE PLAN – The Club will be hosting an OPEN DAY from 11am on Saturday 13th June.  We look forward to welcoming back our members in what is a very uncertain time for Clubs, hospitality and events.  With this in mind the Committee have proposed the Bar opening days be from Thursday – Saturday. Outside of these times members will be expected to be in the Club for the purpose of dining.  The restaurant Little Fish Cafe & Bistro therefore will be open Tuesday -Sunday. (with Sunday only being lunch service).

We also working on announcing a Snapper Tournament for late June, and our Marine Reflections Top Gun Challenge, plus a new event for the Blue Fin run is the new Tuna & Wreckfish Tournament will be in July so watch this space!

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED – We are in the final push to finish off what has been three weeks of flat our renovation. A massive thank you to our small team of helpers here, but now they would like a bit of assistance!  If you can spare some time helping out whether this be cleaning or Club improvements we would love to hear from you! Drop us a line
Congratulations to local angler Darryl Russell off the vessel Nailed It with this Broadbill Swordfish weighing in at 155.20kgs through the Whakatane Sport Fishing Club.
A massive thank you to all of those people that donated towards the Club through this difficult period. This fund raised just over $5,000 that will certainly help cover some of the Club costs incurred over lock down. Just a reminder all of the labour and material cost for the renovation were all donated! It’s amazing what we can get done when the Club pulls together!
BACK TO FISHING! – Great swordfish to the Nailed It team weighed in down in Whakatane on Thursday. Congratualtions Darryl!  No such joy for the few boats that have been sword dropping out the front.  The bluenose fishing however has been working out well with some sizable fish being reported from the Mayor area the past week. Prior to the Queens Birthday weather we have seen some really nice reports of both snapper and tarakihi so its pleasing to see some nice table fish on offer after the lockdown period.  While the Club is still closed we can weigh fish for you. Please call Roly 021 702248 or Kane De Raat 021508 833 and we will arrange a weigh master for you. Also remember vhf channel 3 is the Club’s VHF channel and its there to be used to share information and stay in touch with one another and stay safe. TIGHT LINES!
MOTITI REEFS- SIGN THE PETITION – Congratulations Todd Muller, now leader of the opposition.  Todd is now very well placed, and  very passionate about presenting this petition to parliament, but we need signatures and your support.
That the Government change the law to stop the fishing ban being applied to the reefs around Motiti Island and that the accountability for managing fishing stocks be returned to the Ministry of Fisheries (MPI). PLEASE SIGN. Read more

If you want more insight and a place to express your views the STOP THE LOCKOUT facebook page is another platform where local concerned fisher people are sharing opinions.

Let’s make it happen.

Now is the perfect time to make the necessary changes to improve our fisheries for the benefit and prosperity of ALL New Zealanders.

The fish was caught on a Hooker lure in 550m at the back of Stevies, and weighed in at 332.3kg. The angler is entered into the Hooker Lures Marlin Jackpot with the result pending a line test.

Changes to the Maritime Mobile Repeater allocations

Maritime radio channels will be changing on 1 October 2016

New Zealand, along with a number of other countries, is required to change some maritime VHF repeater channels to make space for newly allocated international services for ship tracking and data services.

New Zealand will be moving a few private VHF repeater services, most Coastguard VHF repeater services, and all NowCasting weather services to accommodate these changes.

The frequency changes will take place in New Zealand on October 1 2016, before the peak summer recreational boating season when VHF radio services become busy. This ensures New Zealand is ready for the changes that come into force internationally on 1 January 2017.

AED Unit at the Club

A collaborative effort from the Tauranga Marina Society and the TSFC has resulted in a life saving device now being located in the foyer of the Tauranga Sport Fishing Club. AED’s are used in situations where a person has suffered a cardiac arrest.
AED stands for Automated External Defibrillator, but it’s also commonly referred to as a defib. Without getting too technical here, an AED is a portable medical device that can automatically assess a patient’s heart rhythm. It judges whether defibrillation is needed and, if required, administers an electric shock through the chest wall to heart.  AEDs are very clever machines – our one uses voice prompts to guide the user through the rescue process. Anyone can use an AED – you don’t have to be medically qualified. All TSFC staff and Marina staff have been trained.
To find where the closest AED’s are, have a lookhere

TSFC Committee Elections

Its a good idea for a Club to have a Election from time to time. Nominating the people you think will improve your Club, as well as having the opportunity to contribute personally is an important dynamic in making the Club your own. Ballot papers have now been posted to every member at considerable cost to the Club so we would encourage you to return these and have your say. Check here to see your Candidate Profiles.
